In the early days of the United States Army, the humble, sturdy mule was invaluable in wartime. The hardy (and occasionally ornery) creature thus made a perfect mascot for the entire military branch and West Point's athletic teams. Today, Army has a costumed mule mascot alongside its live mascots, aka the Mule Corps.
